Hello! I am

Willam Newton

I do things

I am a software engineer who loves building and designing digital applications. My current focus is building human-friendly products and growing as a software engineer, with the possibility of learning new technology here and there.

01. About Me

Hello everyone! My name is William, and I enjoy creating things, whether they live on the internet, in a physical space, or even on my hard drive. My passion for software development started in 2003 when I started using a computer and became curious about how the computer knew what the user was doing. That led me down the rabbit hole of programming, which taught me a ton of how computers operate.

Fast-forwarding today, I have worked at a Tier-1 university, a start-up, and free-lanced for corporations, contributing to my growth. My current focus is building products and digital experiences for various clients.

Below are some technologies I have worked with recently:

  • JavaScript
  • TypeScript
  • Next.JS
  • React
  • Node.js
  • C#

Senior Fullstack Engineer
 @Lykkå Village

2021 - 2022

  • Developed a custom logging library using Node.js, PostgreSQL and SumoLogic, decreasing log complexity and reducing debugging time by 32%.
  • Architected and implemented a RESTful API back-end using Node.js, Express, JWT, and Passport while following the Model-View-Controller (MVC) methodology and adhering to the Single Responsibility principle serving 500+ active users.
  • Pioneered the use of a CI/CD pipeline using Jenkins, Harness, Docker, and Kubernetes, reducing deployment time by 41%.
  • Mentored and onboarded new junior engineers, and hosted weekly team meetings to ensure team integration.
  • Investigated and resolved performance bottlenecks on the client-side rendering by implementing Next.js, improving page load times from seconds to milliseconds.

Fullstack Software Engineer
 @Lykkå Village

2018 - 2021

  • Optimized limited bandwidth environment by implementing filesize reducers (CSSNano, WEBP), lazy loading, and caching systems, reducing 1000s to 100s of API calls per hour to Contentful.
  • Led the initiative to make new and existing material A11y compliant utilizing Axe and Google Lighthouse to improve accessibility grade from 51% to 93%.
  • Collaborated with quality assurance engineers to establish comprehensive Unit, E2E, and A/B testing frameworks, reaching a code coverage of 75%.
  • Designed and implemented user-profile services with user searching using React, MongoDB, Ant Design, and TailwindCSS, resulting in 300 new user registrations in the first week.
  • Initiated the discussions and created strategies to handle technical debt on the back-end to reduce current and future issues.

Junior Software Engineer
 @Texas A&M University

2016 - 2018

  • Addressed code complexity by segregating logic into distinct files while adding documentation, resulting in increased maintainability.
  • Optimized endpoint performance by reducing N+1 queries, introducing caching, and removing the usage of ORM for raw SQL queries.
  • Created a Lua and Python library that extracted information from source files and created a static website to aid in code documentation.
  • Built full-stack application using C++, Winsock, and React to measure airflow in facility air monitors, allowing for remote monitoring and logging.
  • Authored comprehensive style guides, standardizing code and visual elements, reducing cross-team communication.
